Importance of Code Signing your Code

Wikipedia defines Code Signing as “the process of digitally signing executables and scripts to confirm the software author and guarantee that the code has not been altered or corrupted since it was signed by use of a cryptographic hash.”

Anyone who distributes or publishes software over the internet faces the dilemma of instilling trust in their product. As public concern for the security of online data transfers grows, fewer and fewer people are willing to download content without knowing its source and integrity.

Presently most browsers are only able to ask customers if they trust the origin from which data is to be transferred from, and do nothing to validate the safety issues related to the download. In today’s world of spammers and hackers, code can easily be infected then redistributed to the world.

This has aided in the transmission of many of to days computer viruses and the public at large has became wary of this problem.

Through the use of digital signatures developers are able to inform their customers who the code is from as well as setup checksum algorithms to verify that the code has not been altered. The time stamp of the certificate assures the customer that seal is valid and the product is safe to download and use.

Code Signing creates a virtual sealed box for online transfers which is an effective deterrent to unauthorized tampering. As Code Signing Certificates are only distributed through trusted Certificate Authorities, and are not made available to individuals. Only businesses which are verified through state or federal government agencies are issued these certificates.

When contemplating an authority to purchase a Code Signing Certificate from, business owners should be aware that not all Certificate Authorities are alike. Some authorities do put limits on the number of time stamps and applications which are allowed for a particular certificate.

The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 5

As I discussed in my last Blog “The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 4” possible link partners had been determined using the first search option in the IB Promoter Link Tools and requests have been sent out for the first round of links.

As this will take some time I have started optimizing a second page on http://encseodepot.info. Since this process has been covered before I am only going to touch on the high spots of this second page optimization.

As a point of reference each page of a website should be optimized for a different set of keywords. Normal you only want to work with three to four keywords per page, instead of a long string of key words. The software IB Promoter discusses the reasoning behind this in greater detail so I will just leave it at that for now.

Once I had chosen my new set of keywords as described before, I ran a preliminary report on how the page stood before any work was began. This report returned a 17% chance that the page could reach a first page rankings with 30 problems which needed to be addressed.

Of course there were the expected problems which can not be changed at this time, the TLD (.info), site age, traffic, and links. So I went to work on what I could change.

With the help of the detailed reports from IB Promoter I raised the site to a 55% chance of first page listings and reduced the problems which the page had to 11.

You can view the optimized page HERE.

As a side note the website appeared in the Yahoo database last night.

You can download your free trial version on IB Promoter or read their newsletters on the newly Optimized Page.

The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 4

In my last blog of this series “The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 3” I had completed the online SEO of this page and it was time to start building quality links. Under normal conditions this can be a long tedious task, and the two uncontrollable problems with this website:

  1. Search engines just do not like the TLD (.info)
  2.  And this site is hosted on a free server

These problems will make this task a little harder, since webmasters generally don’t trust these sites either.

At any rate we started the process of searching for domain names. The link assistant tool in IB Promoter is setup with 5 modes of searches to help you locate global links.

  • Find link suggestions with forms – The software uses the search engine you specify to locate websites which have a referral form.
  •  Find existing back links to your competitors –This search uncovers which sites are linking to your competitors, it’s always good to have some of them linking to you as well.
  • Find your existing link partners – This can be very helpful to make sure your not linking to someone who has dropped your back link
  •  Find Blogs that could link to you – Acquiring links from Blogs is a good way to get links from related sites.
  • Find links by keyword search – Again you specify the search engines to search and in this case the keywords as well. Another way to nail down related links.

At this time I am using the first option to search for my links, but in time I will eventually use each of the searches to increase the sites popularity.

This will be an on going phase of the optimization of this site where I send out request and have to wait for a reply, but this is not all that I can be doing during the link search period. The website http://encseodepot.info has 5 pages to it, and so far only the home page has been optimized.

It is always a good idea to optimize each page of a site for different keyword phrases and Meta descriptions. This will broaden your presence on the web and create a feeling of trust in your website when it appears in related but different search queries.

So for my next action I will return to Step 1 and start over for another page of the site searching for different keywords.

Do You Need an SSL CERTIFICATE?

If you are wondering about this question, then you should really be asking yourself these questions:

  • How do you feel about your own privacy, do want your website to be trusted by other people?
  • If you own an online store, do you accept online orders paid by credit cards or does a third party handle the payments for you?
  • Does your site require visitors to register and log in to your website?
  • Does your site collect information about your visitors such as addresses, birth dates, driver’s license, or any other sensitive ID numbers?
  • Do you need to comply with privacy and security standards in your market?

A Security Socket Layer (SSL) provides the answers for each of the above questions in three crucial ways:

  1. Through encryption an SSL certificate protects any sensitive information being transferred to and from your website. Would you send a check through the mail with just a stamp on it like you would send a post card? Encryption as an electronic envelope, scrambling the data so that only you and your client are able to read what is transferred. By using public and private keys an SSL create a socket were the website handshakes with your clients browser and establishes a unique set of session keys before any transmissions begin. A true 128 bit SSL certificate offers the strongest encryption for your visitor’s protection.
  2. With every SSL certificate which is set up the certificate authenticates your particular server and domain name to verify your business entity. How would you react to receiving a letter asking for personal information from someone you didn’t know? When a secure socket handshake occurs your client’s browser requires information from your server which is returned in the closed padlock or certain SSL trust seals. With high level security browsers your company name is displayed and the browser bar turns green. But if there is a problem with the information transferred an error message or warning is displayed. This creates a high level of trust from your clients.
  3. A Security Socket Certificate is issued through trusted sources know as Certificate Authorities. These authorities vary in the information which verify and the amount of trust they provide. On the low end they may only verify the domain name before issuing the certificate, while high end certificates verify the existence of a business, the ownership of a domain name, and the authority to apply for the certificate.

The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 3

On to optimization, as I stated in my last Blog “The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 2” my new website http://www.encseodepot.info has been published and Google has added it to their database.

The initial report from IB Promoter gave the site a 46% chance of first page rankings, and pointed out 19 problems which could hold the website of these positions.

One of the first things I needed to work on was the “Body Text’ of the new site. Although the number of keywords was ok, as well as the keyword density, the word count was to low. This created another problem for me due to the background artwork I had chosen during the CSS phase of the project.

With this problem solved and a few others as well, including keywords in the title, keywords in same site links, bold typeset, and some minor html conflicts, I was able to raise the percentage to 55% change of first page rankings. This also reduced the number of problem with the site from 19 down to 10.

Now as I have said before there are a couple things completely out of my control.

  • By using the cheap TDL (.info) I have to accept that this will always be a problem and there is absolutely nothing I can do short of purchasing a new domain.
  • This is a brand new webpage and search engines do look at the age of a site. There are many fly by night websites that disappear almost as quickly as they appear.

So there are really 8 problems which I can work on. Of these eight problems 6 of them have to do with links to my new site, and are Essential to a first page ranking.

  • Since the site has just been published there is not enough traffic to the site
  • Also the amount of quality links are too low
  • Another important aspect of the incoming links is that they should have keywords of the site in them.

Another less important factor is the readability of the site. IB Promoter uses the “Flesch Reading Test to determine how technical the text is on a website. Although this factor generally doesn’t affect rankings it is always better to score high on this factor.

Hope you enjoyed the read and this helps you. Remember to check the links to IB Promoter and their weekly newsletter on my site https://enchostdepot.wordpress.com

The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 2

As described in step 1: keywords were selected for our new website by examining our competition’s keyword list. With IBP’s software we were able to generate reports for related words and view a monthly search averages for these words which allowed us to choose keywords which were related and received a good share of search queries.

After I had built my keyword list and Meta tags for the new website; “http://www.encseodepot.info, I was submitted the site to 51 search engines automatically using the IBP site submission tool. I was very pleased that within 24 hours the new site appeared in the Google database using this tool from IB Promoter.

So now it’s time to begin optimizing this new site. As I have stated before in some of the comments I have left around wordpress there are 166 factors I need to address. And at this time before starting the process of optimization, our new website has failed only 19 of these tests. As the website is presently there is a 46 % chance of reaching the top page of Google.

Some of the factors which failed will be out of my control for now, others can be fixed, but I will get into that on my next blog.

I hope you will follow along during this process and visiting this new site as I make changes.

Cheap Chaps for a Reason Update

Since I wrote about my fiasco with the cheap chaps I have been doing some reading on the products from Fox Creek Leather and I happened upon their “Crash Testimonials” page.

The page was buried kind of deep on their website but I was impressed by what other customers were saying. Now I’ve been lucky enough not to have laid down any of the Harley’s I have ridden, but I did crash some bikes in my younger years and it wasn’t a fun ride to say the least.

Growing up in the mountains of western North Carolina on dirt bikes riding old logging roads I had my share of spills. And then with my first street bike, being a bit of a daredevil back then, I learned what road rash was pretty quickly.

Well, that was then and this is now,,, and road rash IS NOT Your friend lol.

That’s what impressed me with the reads on their page. If you haven’t looked them over before you should go to Fox Creek Leather’s Crash Testimonials and check them out.

New Website to Test IB Promoter

As I started my Blog series on IB Promoter’s SEO software I wondered what would the best way to explain the benefits I had encountered using the software before. Once I had written the beginning blog “The Steps to a Profitable #1 Ranking: SEO Step 1” I came across the idea of building a new website and then describe the steps I took to optimize this new website.

The website address of this new creation is http://encseodepot.info. During the creation of this new site I went through the steps of searching for keywords and examining the keywords of the companies which would be my competitors for the #1 ranking on Google, as described in my first blog.

Now, this is just the beginning of this new website and I’m sure there will be several updates before I have finished, but as I write this series of blogs you will be able to watch the changes to the site as you watch the ranking climb (J I hope)

Once I finished the site last night and published it I ran a report on the site and there is a 32% chance of it being listed #1 on Google at this time, so to me that’s a great place to start.

One of the factors which is major disadvantage for my new web page it the TDL, (.info).
With the fairly new creation of this TDL (.info) and the reduced price to acquire a domain with it, many search engines look upon those domain names with suspicions of possible spamming. So this should really be a challenge.

If you like more information about the SEO software tools I use visit IB Promoter or read their newsletter on my blog page.

Cheap Chaps for a Reason

Last winter I was in the market for some new Chaps. My old pair had served me well, (an expensive Harley Davidson brand of chaps) yes they were a nice set of chaps. But, since I had lost some 50 pounds they just didn’t fit anymore. So I needed some new ones,

A few months earlier, when fall had just started and the rides had just started to be a little breezy I purchased a new leather jacket from Jamin Leather which I really liked. It was a nice heavy jacket and fit great. I was really impressed by the quality and the price.

So much so that when it came time to get the new chaps I decided to go back to Jamin Leathers.

So there I was looking through what they had, when I found what I thought was another super buy. The chaps I had found were heavy duty and lined just like my old Harley brand, and they fit great! Man, I thought, why did I ever pay that price before these were ½ the price of the old pair and they look like their made just as good.

Well a few weeks later I had a ride come up where I needed my new chaps. So I put them on and headed off. At first everything was great, the new chaps felt good, and I was nice and warm riding down the road,,,,, and then,,,,,, I hit the interstate.

I went through the gears of my Wide Glide and was cruising at about 70 when I first noticed something was wrong. When I looked down one leg of the new chaps were unzipped up to the knee.

So I pulled over into the emergency lane and rezipped the leg. When I got back out on the road it begins to unzip itself again. Then as I leaned over to zip that one down the other leg came completely unzipped and was flying behind me on the bike like a flag. And before I could get pulled over they were both flapping in the wind.

Needless to say when I did get off the road those chaps when into the saddlebag, and were never worn again.

The lesion I learned was that I will never look for a cheap pair of chaps again! I’m not too worried about it this time of year, but next fall I’m going with an American made leather company Fox Creek Leather. I’ve talked with allot of people that swear by them and they offer a lifetime guarantee.
